Let’s Talk Supplements

So this morning has been interesting. We had pretty bad storms last night with non-stop thunder which lead to quite the restless sleep.  Unfortunately I had to wake up at 5AM to get to work…with no power in my house.  Gotta love getting ready in the dark!

As you’d probably expect, I look completely glamorous today.

Staff Worker or Criminal?

Luckily I work in a gym setting so people don’t expect much from me (at least that’s what I tell myself).   This coffee is my best friend right now 🙂

On the positive side, I just read the weather forecast and we’re supposed to have a great stretch of sunny days coming up.

I need to soak em’ up while I can.  It is Cleveland, OH and soon enough it will be a winter wonderland!

Let’s Talk Supplements

Along with my coffee and breakfast (which was a mix of Shredded Wheat and Peanut Butter Puffins cereal with strawberries and soy milk), I also had my daily multivitamin.

Typically I take these specific brands that I talked about in a previous post.  I usually get them at the local Vitamin Shoppe or order online from them.

But when I ran out of multivitamins a couple of months ago, I figured I would try out a new brand.  I went with Trader Joe’s brand and I actually really like it.  It doesn’t have a full day of iron, which I also like.  Too much iron in a supplement does not agree with my stomach (which is common) and can ‘back me up’ so to speak. Not fun!

Along with trying my best to eat a healthy diet full of variety and nutrients and exercising, I always try and remember to take my supplements.  I don’t know if they really do anything to be honest.  But I feel like it’s my “insurance” in a way.

Product Review

Recently I was asked to review some products by Sun Chlorella. I was familiar with the product since I did work in a supplement store for a few months while I was in between jobs, but I had never taken anything by this brand.

I was sent a package of Sun Eleuthero Tea along with some Sun Elethero Tablets.

From their Website:

Sun Eleuthero is an herb that can give your body a natural energy boost, decrease stress, and support your body’s fight against the ill-effects of modern living — without dangerous side effects. Eleuthero is an “adaptogen,” which is defined as “a non-toxic substance which reinforces the body’s ability to react to stress.” Eleuthero is considered one of nature’s most powerful, adaptogenic herbs.

When I worked in the supplement store last summer I learned a lot about vitamins and herbs and really found it all fascinating.  I had no idea so many herbs existed, eleuthero being one of them.

My Thoughts

I took the supplements daily (although I did forget a few times!) for the 20 days of tablets provided.  I also tried some of the tea.

I didn’t feel a difference in my energy, but that may be due to the fact that I already take a multivitamin, exercise regularly, eat well, and sleep enough.  I certainly didn’t feel anything extra, but I also don’t feel like I am lacking in energy to begin with (besides today of course!)

I liked the tea better than the tablets simply based on personal preference.  I love herbal teas.  Plus, the manufacturer recommends that you take 15 tablets a day.  Way too many for me. I’m a ‘one-a-day’ kinda gal.

I think the product is fine and the company seems reputable.  And although I would not personally buy this product in the future (mainly because supplements are expensive), I do think it can be useful for someone else who wants to use herbal products to supplement their diet.

Total Body Workout + Another Lazy Dinner

At work yesterday I taught a Total Body Toning class.  It’s a 45-minute class focusing on strength training.  I love teaching this format because I don’t have to worry about choreography like in my other classes (Turbo Kick and Step) and I can get creative with new moves.  Don’t get me wrong, I love teaching choreography and it’s a ton of fun.  But sometimes it’s nice to give my brain a rest from 32-count phrases and focus on pumpin’ some iron!

Yesterday’s Total Body Workout looked like this (click to view):

*Notes:

  • We took about a 30-second rest in between sets
  • The weights I personally used ranged from 5lb dumbbells (for exercises like shoulder raises) and 12lb dumbbells (for rows, chest presses, overhead shoulder presses, and biceps).  I used a 15lb body bar for the clean and press.
  • The squat with a front raise and leg lift looks like thisIt’s tough!
  • The side lunge and reach with an overhead raise looked like this except I used a dumbbell.

After teaching it was time for my lunch break so I decided to keep my workout momentum going and completed  30 minutes of cardio.  My workout looked like this:

Felt good to get in some heart pumpin’ cardio while listening to Lady’s Gaga’s newest CD (which is amazing!!)

Dinner

Dinner was another lazy creation.  I picked up some orange chicken at Trader Joes over the weekend and decided it would be a good night to make it since Andy was out for the evening.

First I sauteed up some sweet peppers and mushrooms in olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper:

As the veggies were cooking I heated the chicken in a canola oil blend over medium heat on the stove:

Along side the chicken and veggies I decided to make some Near East Roasted Pecan and Garlic rice.  This flavor is so, so good!

While waiting for everything to cook I sipped on one of my favorite drinks:

I love Skinny Girl Margaritas! I really enjoy the taste.  It’s not sweet at all like a typical margarita.  It’s more of a tart flavor and it’s refreshing.  I love em’!

Cheers! 🙂

Once the chicken was cooked (and I was slightly buzzed!), I added the delicious orange sauce (which I microwaved for 2 minutes) and sauteed veggies:

Dinner was ready!

As far as frozen meals go, this chicken is pretty tasty and I’d definitely buy it again to make one of my lazy dinners.

Play Time

When Andy got home around 8pm we relaxed outside on our patio.

We spent some time watching (and laughing) as Boo and Sophia went crazy running around:

Who you callin' crazy? You're the one dancing in the living room every morning... alone!

Watch me HOP!

Dog or monster?

Gimme!

For a moment they were calm:

But this one is never truly calm:

Love my pups! 🙂

Vacation

Tomorrow morning I leave on my flight to North Carolina for a whole week to see my family! Andy isn’t going (booo!) because he already has used most of his vacation days.  I am going to miss him and the pups so much! But I am definitely looking forward to a week of relaxing, eating, sitting on the beach, running by the ocean, and just having fun with everyone.  See ya in Emerald Isle, NC!

Questions:

Do you like to fly? I’m actually a bit scared of flying and I always feel nervous and can’t relax one bit while in the air (Andy on the other hand falls right to sleep!) But I  suck it up and do it because I want to go places and see friends and family that live far away.

Are you taking any vacations this summer?

Good Morning!

Have you entered the Amazing Grass giveaway yet? If not, there’s still time! I’ll be picking a winner tomorrow night!

Workout

This morning started out with a nice workout.  I came into work early to get in some exercise before my day started at 8:30am.  I am planning on running a race with my dad in a few weeks, which I didn’t realize was coming up so soon! We’re running either the 5K or the 10K at the Flying Pig Marathon. Depending on how my running goes over the next few weeks will determine the distance 😉

Flying Pig!

According to my workout log I have not hit the treadmill since March 10th! Woops! I guess I needed a break from running.  But now that the weather is beginning to warm up, I think running will be more appealing to me and I’ll be able to take it outside.  Bottom line: I need to get my booty in gear if I want to do this race!

This morning I eased back into running and completed 20 minutes at paces between 5.0 and 6.0. After the run I decided to do a weight circuit as I wasn’t feeling any more cardio.

I did the following exercises two times through, back to back:

  • Assisted Pull Ups: 8 reps
  • Push Ups on toes: 10 reps
  • One Leg Deadlift with a kettle bell: 10 reps each leg
  • See Saw Shoulder Press with dumbbells (alternating arms): 12 reps each arm
  • Walking Lunges with overhead front raise holding a medicine ball: 12 reps each leg
  • One Arm Dumbbell Row: 10 reps each arm

The circuit only took about 10-15 minutes to complete, but kept me moving the whole time.  Felt good! I also stretched for a good 10-15 minutes too.  My hips are tight from my lack of stretching lately.  When I’m not running consistently, I slack on stretching also.

My Go-To Shoe

During my run I realized I needed new shoes. They feel quite worn!  My go-to shoes are Sauconys.  I love this brand! I get the same shoes each time (or a variation of the shoe).  I will be purchasing my third pair of Saucony Cohesions.  They’re a solid shoe for neutral runners and I definitely recommend this brand!

My Go-To Shoe

I almost always buy my shoes online since I know which kind of shoes I like, plus it’s so convenient! (side note: I recommend going to a specialty running shoe store if you’re new to running to get properly fitted)

The Running Warehouse

One of my favorite places to shop online for shoes is the Running Warehouse.  This is a great website with a terrific variety of shoes and apparel.  The customer service is also great and keeps me going back to them.  The orders ship quickly and they have a free returns if there is a problem with the shoes.

2nd Day Give Away!

In honor of Cardio Pizza’s first birthday, the folks over at the Running Warehouse have offered to give one lucky reader a $25.00 gift certificate!

How to Enter

  • For your chance to win the $25.00 gift certificate to the Running Warehouse,  simply comment on this post telling me your go-to running or athletic shoe!

My First Giveaway!

Good Morning!

Before I get to my first giveaway, here’s a couple of pictures from my Friday Girl’s Night with my college sorority sisters Lindsay, Morgan and Megan:

Morgan and I

Megan and Lindsay

We went to a cute bistro called Tartine. I started with a peach and basil sangria, which was delicious.  The basil gave the drink such a great kick!  For an appetizer we split a cheese and cracker plate that included 7 different types of cheeses.  Each were delicious and had great flavor.

For my entree I got a pizza, which came on a thin whole wheat crust.  The pizza toppings included wild mushrooms, goat cheese, wilted leeks, and black truffle oil.  The combination of flavors from the toppings was fantastic! I ate half of it at dinner and ended up eating the other half later on in the night when I got home as a late night snack.

We ended the night with some chocolate and espresso martinis while chatting away.  It was great to get together! We’re planning another outing sometime in May.  Can’t wait!
