Let’s Talk Supplements

So this morning has been interesting. We had pretty bad storms last night with non-stop thunder which lead to quite the restless sleep.  Unfortunately I had to wake up at 5AM to get to work…with no power in my house.  Gotta love getting ready in the dark!

As you’d probably expect, I look completely glamorous today.

Staff Worker or Criminal?

Luckily I work in a gym setting so people don’t expect much from me (at least that’s what I tell myself).   This coffee is my best friend right now 🙂

On the positive side, I just read the weather forecast and we’re supposed to have a great stretch of sunny days coming up.

I need to soak em’ up while I can.  It is Cleveland, OH and soon enough it will be a winter wonderland!

Let’s Talk Supplements

Along with my coffee and breakfast (which was a mix of Shredded Wheat and Peanut Butter Puffins cereal with strawberries and soy milk), I also had my daily multivitamin.

Typically I take these specific brands that I talked about in a previous post.  I usually get them at the local Vitamin Shoppe or order online from them.

But when I ran out of multivitamins a couple of months ago, I figured I would try out a new brand.  I went with Trader Joe’s brand and I actually really like it.  It doesn’t have a full day of iron, which I also like.  Too much iron in a supplement does not agree with my stomach (which is common) and can ‘back me up’ so to speak. Not fun!

Along with trying my best to eat a healthy diet full of variety and nutrients and exercising, I always try and remember to take my supplements.  I don’t know if they really do anything to be honest.  But I feel like it’s my “insurance” in a way.

Product Review

Recently I was asked to review some products by Sun Chlorella. I was familiar with the product since I did work in a supplement store for a few months while I was in between jobs, but I had never taken anything by this brand.

I was sent a package of Sun Eleuthero Tea along with some Sun Elethero Tablets.

From their Website:

Sun Eleuthero is an herb that can give your body a natural energy boost, decrease stress, and support your body’s fight against the ill-effects of modern living — without dangerous side effects. Eleuthero is an “adaptogen,” which is defined as “a non-toxic substance which reinforces the body’s ability to react to stress.” Eleuthero is considered one of nature’s most powerful, adaptogenic herbs.

When I worked in the supplement store last summer I learned a lot about vitamins and herbs and really found it all fascinating.  I had no idea so many herbs existed, eleuthero being one of them.

My Thoughts

I took the supplements daily (although I did forget a few times!) for the 20 days of tablets provided.  I also tried some of the tea.

I didn’t feel a difference in my energy, but that may be due to the fact that I already take a multivitamin, exercise regularly, eat well, and sleep enough.  I certainly didn’t feel anything extra, but I also don’t feel like I am lacking in energy to begin with (besides today of course!)

I liked the tea better than the tablets simply based on personal preference.  I love herbal teas.  Plus, the manufacturer recommends that you take 15 tablets a day.  Way too many for me. I’m a ‘one-a-day’ kinda gal.

I think the product is fine and the company seems reputable.  And although I would not personally buy this product in the future (mainly because supplements are expensive), I do think it can be useful for someone else who wants to use herbal products to supplement their diet.

Mine is going pretty well, I can’t complain! The sun is shining, I’m feeling like myself again since being sick, and simply appreciating and enjoying life.

I have some fun trips planned for spring and summer and I am just so excited inside thinking about them.  I can’t wait to get together with family and friends who I don’t normally get to be around on a regular basis.  I love having fun events to look forward to!

Do you have any trips planned this spring or summer?

The last trip I took was to North Carolina last summer where my parents have a beach home.  I’m heading back there Memorial weekend with Andy and my family.  Can’t wait!

My First Giveaway!

Good Morning!

Before I get to my first giveaway, here’s a couple of pictures from my Friday Girl’s Night with my college sorority sisters Lindsay, Morgan and Megan:

Morgan and I

Megan and Lindsay

We went to a cute bistro called Tartine. I started with a peach and basil sangria, which was delicious.  The basil gave the drink such a great kick!  For an appetizer we split a cheese and cracker plate that included 7 different types of cheeses.  Each were delicious and had great flavor.

For my entree I got a pizza, which came on a thin whole wheat crust.  The pizza toppings included wild mushrooms, goat cheese, wilted leeks, and black truffle oil.  The combination of flavors from the toppings was fantastic! I ate half of it at dinner and ended up eating the other half later on in the night when I got home as a late night snack.

We ended the night with some chocolate and espresso martinis while chatting away.  It was great to get together! We’re planning another outing sometime in May.  Can’t wait!

Vitamins and Rest Days

Good Morning!

I hope you had a great weekend.  I really didn’t do much, but I’m always a big fan of weekends like that! I spent time relaxing with Andy, watching movies, eating (I had two Dairy Queen blizzards this weekend!), and getting some errands done.  All and all, a good weekend!  Now, it’s back to the grind!

Workout

Today’s workout was a mix of cardio and weights.  Ever since I saw Elizabeth Hasselback’s workout, I’ve been wanting to get more creative with my own exercise routine.

Unfortunately, time for my own workouts is limited due to my teaching schedule at work, but I can make due! Tuesdays and Thursdays are when I take about an hour for myself to exercise before or after work.  I only teach one class on these days (and both days are non-cardio classes), so it makes it easier to do my own thing.

Last week’s workout looked like this.  Today’s workout included the following:

Cardio and Stretching:

  • Stretched Legs: 15 minutes (See this site for stretching ideas for hips/legs stretches.  Great for runners!)
  • 1.5 mile run: 15 minutes, speed varying from 5.5-8.0 MPH

Weight Circuit #1, repeated 2x

  • Pull Ups: 10 reps
  • Push Ups: 10, on toes
  • Kettle bell one-leg dead lift: 10 reps on each leg

Cardio:

  • AMT, level 4: 5 minutes

Weight Circuit #2, repeated 2x

  • See Saw Shoulder Press: 15 each arm
  • Two arm row for upper back (machine): 10 reps
  • Walking Lunges with Overhead Shoulder lift (holding a medicine ball): 20 reps

This workout took 55 minutes (including my 15 minutes of stretching).  The workout was nice, but I was a bit tired today.  I see a good couple of days of rest from exercise in my future! Plus, I need new running shoes, I can tell that mine are quite worn.

Rest Days

What I’ve come to realize about exercise is that not every day is going to be the best workout. That’s why it’s important to listen to your body, especially when you feel more tired than usual.

Sure, there will be some days when you just feel like being lazy and not working out (and that’s ok!), but other times it’s a different kind of tired.  A tired where your body could benefit from some good rest.  I will most likely take the weekend off, depending on how I feel the rest of the week.  I most always take at least one day off though.

How often do you take rest days?

Vitamins and Supplements

Andy and I stocked up on some vitamins and supplements this weekend.  I take my vitamins and supplements pretty much every day.  I rarely forget.  It’s become a habit of mine, like eating breakfast (which I also rarely forget! My stomach won’t let me 😉 )

I honestly do feel better when I take my vitamins regularly.  Now, my feeling good could be from a number of things, such as getting enough sleep (I almost always get 8 hours), eating nutritious foods, and exercise.  But I also feel like the vitamins do play a role.

Here are the vitamins and supplements I take daily:

  • Multivitamin, I use a brand called Alive by Nature’s Made

Multivitamin

  • Vitamin D, 1,000 I.U (I use a generic brand of this right now, but I’ve also used these gummies by Rainbow Light, which are fun!)
  • Fish Oil, at least 1,000g of EPA/DHA combined, which is 3 capsules in the brand that I use, which is Barleans.  I love this brand!

Barleans

Occasionally I take a greens supplement. Andy and I just stocked up on Amazing Grass this past weekend.  I love the chocolate flavor.  It’s not sweet by any means, more of a natural cocoa flavor, but I enjoy it. I drink it with water or I’ve mixed it in yogurt.

Amazing Grass

Alright, time to get to work! Have a great day everyone!

Questions:

Do you take any vitamins or supplements daily? If so, what kind?

Non-fitness related question: Did you watch the Bachelor? What did you think of his choice? I was all for Emily, but I’m second guessing the chemistry they have…but I wish them the best! I see Ashely is the new bachelorette though! I think that’s a great choice!
